Receives Award for Physician Excellence
Milton, Mass. - Amitabha Ghosh Roy, M.D. has been selected by his
peers to be the recipient of the 2005 Lira Family Award for Physician
Excellence at Milton Hospital. Selected for his commitment to medicine
and his involvement in hospital and community activities, Dr. Roy
will be recognized during Sunday service at the Parkway Methodist
Church in Milton on April 3, 2005.
The Lira Family Award for Physician Excellence at Milton Hospital
was established by the late Hugo "Baron" Lira in his last will and
testament. He asked that the Parkway Methodist Church, of which
he was a dedicated member, use a portion of his estate to annually
recognize an outstanding Milton Hospital physician and that the
fund be memorialized in the name of the Lira family. The Baron built
a strong relationship with hospital employees and medical staff
by contributing over 6,000 hours of volunteer work until his death
in 1992.
Dr. Roy has been a leader in the field of minimally-invasive surgery,
and was instrumental in bringing laparascopic surgery to the local
area. In 1990, he performed the south shore's first laparascopic
gallbladder surgery. He also organized and led the hospital's Hyperalimentation
Committee, developing all hospital guidelines for providing nutrients
to patients both intravenously and through the gastrointestinal
tract.
Dr. Roy has been very active in the hospital's community education
program, lecturing on topics such as breast cancer and poor circulation.
He is a member of the Clinical Care Committee and Operating Room
Committee. He has also served on numerous hospital committees, including
the Medical Executive Committee.
A native of India, Dr. Roy studied medicine at the University of
Calcutta, R.G. Kar Medical College. He is a fellow of the Royal
College of Surgeons of England and the American College of Surgeons.
Joining Milton Hospital in 1973, he served as Chief of Surgery from
1987 to 1993. He is certified by the Board of the American College
of Surgeons.
Dr. Roy credits the hospital's supportive environment and his growing
practice as the reasons for his long-standing tenure at Milton Hospital.
"I am very surprised and grateful to receive this award. It
is an honor," he said.
