Eat Well. Milton Hospital Begins Outpatient Medical Nutrition Program

Milton, Mass. - A well-balanced diet helps us maintain good health and can even prevent some diseases. But when we become ill or need to control our weight control the confusing and conflicting information makes it difficult to know just what foods are appropriate. That is when Milton Hospital can help.

The outpatient Medical Nutrition Therapy Clinic at Milton Hospital provides comprehensive, one-on-one nutritional assessment and counseling to help patients understand how food and nutrition affect total health and wellbeing. Our team of registered dietitians work closely with patients to help them understand how nutrition therapy can aid in maintaining overall health and managing conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, gastrointestinal problems, kidney disease, high blood pressure and weight management problems. Our dietitians will construct an individual eating plan that takes into account the illness or desired weight reduction, the individual's lifestyle, exercise habits and health goals.

A registered dietitian meets individually for counseling after referral by a healthcare provider. Candidates for the program must be referred by their physician. The program helps individuals with a wide variety of medical issues and nutritional concerns such as: cancer, diabetes, eating disorders, food allergies, gastrointestinal problems, heart disease, high cholesterol, hypertension (high blood pressure), hypoglycemia/hyperglycemia, kidney disease, liver disease, obesity & weight management, osteoporosis and pancreatitis.

"The initial visit includes a review of your current eating habits by assessing all foods eaten for three days prior. This three-day "food journal" assists the registered dietitians in developing a more comprehensive, personalized plan for you," said Jane Griffin, RD, program director.

Follow up visits are usually shorter during which time you review your progress and address any issues or problems you are experiencing. Our dietitians will provide you with as much support and resource materials as possible to help you reach your health and wellness goals.
