Lab Scores High Marks in State Bioterror Drills

Milton, Mass. - Milton Hospital's Microbiology Laboratory has earned top scores on two recent bioterrorism drills designed to test their responses to potentially hazardous organisms that could be used for bioterrorism.

Instituted by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, the program requires hospital labs to identify unknown organisms and properly respond to their potentially dangerous presence. Milton's lab has participated in two drills, and has performed among the state's top hospitals in both.

"The drills are a good challenge to our emergency preparedness. We're proud that we've done so well," said Martha Casassa, Laboratory Administrative Director.

As a result of its participation in this program, Milton Hospital has been designated as a "sentinel lab", a first line of defense to receive and analyze specimens in the event that a potential bioterrorist attack occurs in the community.
