New Facilities Will Meet the Demand of a Growing Patient Population While Addressing the Changing Needs of Today's Patients

MILTON, Mass. - Milton Hospital, a clinical affiliate of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center providing community-based health care, is proud to announce the grand opening of its expanded emergency department, self enclosed endoscopy suite and surgical departments, as well as interior and exterior remodeling of the lobby, reception area and admitting department. The landmark expansion and renovation is the first at the hospital in nearly 25 years and includes a 25,000 square foot new building addition and the renovation of 25,000 square feet of existing interior spaces, and a new 70+ car parking deck.

On Friday, September 28, a public ribbon cutting and open house was held at the hospital to celebrate the expansion. Local politicians, hospital staff and members of the community gathered in the new lobby for a behind-the-scenes tour of the new facility and to show their support of the hospital.

"The new emergency department was designed to ensure patient safety, comfort and confidentiality," stated Joseph Morrissey, president and CEO at Milton Hospital. "When the project is fully complete we will be doubling the size of the current emergency room and adding private examination rooms with sound proof doors, plasma TVs and climate control. We are taking the lead in patient care and comfort with continued personalized attention to the local communities." The new emergency department also features a state-of-the art critical care center, a new ambulance entrance and a separate-entrance decontamination room.

"This hospital is the crown jewel of Milton," stated Senator Brian Joyce at the ribbon cutting. "My father and brother have both had their lives saved at Milton Hospital. It takes a community to accomplish an expansion of this caliber, and I am proud to be part of this community."

"Across the generations, Milton Hospital has been a vital resource to the local community," stated Richard Ward, chairman of the hospital's board of directors. "Now, with the considerable shift from inpatient to outpatient care, the expanded ER, endoscopy suite, patient rooms and dedicated reception and waiting area for outpatients will meet these shifting needs. This project ensures Milton Hospital's value to the local community."

"The opening of the new emergency department with state-of-the-art technology, rapid transfer for heart attack patients and telemedicine for stroke patients, ensures our patients will have rapid access to the top specialty care in the area here at our community hospital," stated Mark T. Hodgman, M.D., president of the medical staff. "Additionally, we anticipate that the increase in beds will reduce waiting times for those with less critical illnesses."

The hospital selected Steffian Bradley Architects for their design which enhances patient comfort, convenience and confidentiality while using elements such as natural light. Additionally, Walsh Brothers served as the construction manager for the project and working together, they implemented phased construction schedules and carefully coordinated site management plans to ensure the least possible intrusion to patients, physicians, staff and visitors during the construction activity.

The next two phases of the expansion project will include two new operating rooms, renovations to four existing operating rooms, renovations to the existing emergency department and 19 pre and post surgery bays. The total cost of the construction is $38 million and the funding has come from individuals, businesses, foundations and financing.
