Milton Hospital Physician Named State Surgeon Milton, Mass. - Alexandra L. Accardi, M.D., chief of psychiatry at Milton Hospital and a colonel in the Army National Guard, was honorably appointed State Surgeon for the Massachusetts Army National Guard. She returned from active duty on April 30, where she worked at the Community Based Health Clinic at Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford for the US Army as the physician evaluating wounded soldiers returning from tours of duty or injured in the line of duty. She has been a member of the National Guard for 19 years. In this position, she is responsible to ensure compliance with all directives pertaining to Army and Army National Guard medical fitness standards, and act as the reviewing and approval authority for physical examinations, fitness for duty evaluations, medical profiling and medical review boards. She will conduct medical and psychiatric screening of applicants to armed services; review soldiers for retention in the National Guard; educate and supervise enlisted personnel, physicians and medical students, and act as a member of the Critical Stress Management Team. Dr. Accardi, who is president and medical director of Nova Psychiatric Services in Quincy, earned her medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine. She performed her internship at Boston Veteran's Administration Medical Center in Boston, and a residency at Tufts New England Medical Center. Dr. Accardi's extensive professional experience includes medical director of inpatient psychiatric services and associate professor of psychiatry at Tufts New England Medical Center. She is also the medical director of the outpatient clinic at the Old Colony YMCA in Brockton. She has a staff psychiatry position at Braintree Hospital/Healthsouth, Quincy Medical Center, Carney Hospital, New England Sinai Hospital and Northeast Specialty Hospital, with campuses in Waltham and Braintree. Dr. Accardi will perform all of the duties of state surgeon as well as maintain her psychiatric practice in Quincy and Milton.
