Milton Hospital Transfusion Service Earns AABB Accreditation

Milton, MA - The Milton Hospital Transfusion Service has been granted accreditation by the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), according to Jon L. Keller, MD, MPH., Chief of Pathology and medical director of the hospital's clinical laboratory.

Accreditation follows an intensive on-site inspection, performed every other year by specially trained AABB assessors, who document that the level of medical, technical, and administrative performance within the facility meets or exceeds the standards set by the AABB.

AABB accreditation represents an important designation for transfusion medicine services because it demonstrates an organization's commitment to advanced learning, continuous improvement, and innovation by striving to sustain the highest possible level of patient care.

"This level of excellence would not be possible without the daily efforts of all individuals involved in the transfusion service," said Valerie Farretta, Transfusion Service Supervisor.

"Dr. Keller and administrative director Martha Casassa help ensure that our policies and procedures are compatible with both AABB standards and a variety of other state and federal regulations. The professional judgment of the medical staff in determining the need for transfusion, and the clinical monitoring of the patient by nursing staff are critical elements of safe transfusion practice. And last but not least, we rely on the hard working medical technologists who always get the job done and often work long hours on a moments notice. Congratulations to all for a job well done," she said.
