Hospitalists Strengthen Inpatient Care

Hospitalists, as their name implies, are physicians who specialize in your in-hospital care at the request of your personal physician.

A hospitalist directs your care and sees you every day that you are in the hospital. Your hospitalist may ask other physician specialists to see you as well, and works closely with your nurse, social workers, dieticians, respiratory therapists, and pharmacists to give you the safest and best care available.

In July, Milton Hospital proudly introduced a hospitalist program, in conjunction with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston. The initial response to this new type of inpatient care has been outstanding.

Hospitalist will quickly follow up on your progress and test results, communicating with you, your primary care physician, and your family. Your hospitalist also arranges for any services or prescriptions that you may need upon discharge. After you are discharged, your hospitalist provides a written summary of your hospital stay to your primary care physician, who then resumes responsibility for your care. Hospitalists do not see patients in primary care offices or in outpatient clinics.

Although the program is still in the inaugural stages, hospitalists have been responsible for approximately 25 percent of the total inpatient census at the hospital, exceeding initial expectations. According to Milton Hospital Chief Medical Officer Joseph Raduazzo, M.D., "When we began considering this program, we felt it was something that would be of significant benefit to our patients, staff and affiliated physicians. It has been successful beyond our expectations…particularly with patients who appreciate the immediate accessibility to a physician throughout the day. Feedback about the program has been very positive."

"Hospitalists seek out the nurse caring for the patient to find out and to share information," said Milton Hospital's Lynn Cronin, RN, who directs nursing care in some of the hospital's clinical areas. "They are part of the team and having them available on site is wonderful."

Studies of hospitalist programs show that both patients and primary care physicians are very satisfied with the high quality care hospitalists provide.

The program director for the hospitalist administrative team is Mark Krivopal, M.D. All of our hospitalists are Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and are provided by Beth Israel Deaconess HealthCare Hospitalist Services.
