One of the key joint affiliation efforts between Milton Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical
Center, our Geriatrics Program emphasizes communication and links between seniors and the health
care system. The goal is to enhance the quality of care provided to the significant
population of elderly citizens in the community, including those in local
nursing homes, in senior housing/assisted living residences and in their own homes. The program continually
seeks to develop new programs and services to meet the needs of the geriatric population.
The Geriatrics Program is under the direction of Dr. Virginia Cummings, who is also the Director of Long-Term Care at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and a member of the faculty of Harvard Medical School. Geriatric Nurse
Practitioners Roxanne Musto and Maureen O’Shea assist many nursing facilities in the area to
improve the quality of nursing care delivered to our seniors.
Allen Waltman, M.D., who recently joined our geriatrics staff, is the Medical Director of the
Wellness Center at Orchard Cove, a Canton retirement community. He plans to start a Geriatric
Home Care program in Milton and neighboring communities, and also sees patients at Milton Hospital
for geriatric consulation and geriatric primary care.
In addition to Drs. Waltman and Cummings, a number of our primary care physicians have elected to join the geriatrics program. These physicians are interested in expanding their geriatric practices and are welcoming referrals of senior citizens. They have access to all of the resources of the Geriatrics Programs at Milton Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and they are participating in an educational curriculum taught by Harvard Geriatricians, to ensure that the care they deliver to seniors meets the highest academic standards.
