ED Hours: 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
Fast Track: 10am - 8:00pm, 7 days a week
The Milton Hospital Emergency Department, which serves more than 18,000 patients a year, is staffed with board-certified emergency physicians, highly qualified emergency registered nurses (RNs), a team of support staff, and a network of specialists who can be called in at a moment’s notice. Milton’s Emergency Department is dedicated to providing the highest quality of care quickly and conveniently. Our team of emergency physicians and nurses are highly trained in various specialties to handle a broad range of adult and pediatric emergency care. Our ER doctors are experts in treating critically ill patients and managing trauma. They are supported by emergency nurses dedicated to delivering care with compassion, dignity and respect. All Emergency Department nurses have earned and maintain specialized credentials that enable them to care for all types of emergency patients. These include advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), trauma nurse core course, and advanced training in the care of pediatric patients and their emergencies. Milton Hospital’s emergency department also employs physician assistants (PAs) to expedite the treatment of minor injuries and illnesses. Physician assistants are health care professionals licensed to practice medicine with physician supervision. As part of their comprehensive responsibilities, PAs conduct physical exams, diagnose and treat illnesses, order and interpret tests, counsel on preventive health care, assist in surgery, and in virtually all states can write prescriptions.
Fast Track Service - (minor injuries and less emergent problems)
Our Emergency Department operates a Fast Track service staffed with a physician assistant designed to facilitate and expedite the care of patients with non-emergent complaints. Patients are assessed and triaged by trained ED nurses and directed to the Fast Track based on the presenting complaint. Care in the Fast Track is provided on a first come, first serve basis and is focused on decreasing the overall wait times during peak hours.
Rapid Cardiac Transfer Program
In June of 2003 Milton Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston established a clinical affiliation for the rapid cardiac transfer of cardiac patients. The program provides for the immediate transfer of Milton Hospital patients to Beth Israel, which has Boston’s only all-digital catheterization emergency cardiac care transfer program. The cardiac catheterization laboratory at BIDMC is designed for patients undergoing coronary angiography, angioplasty, stent placement and other emergency cardiac procedures.
Stroke Transfer Program
Licensed as one of Massachusetts' first hospitals designated to provide Primary Stroke Services, Milton Hospital is prepared to rapidly diagnose and treat acute stroke patients.
Through a combination of community education, medical staff training, implementation of hospital protocols geared toward quick stroke diagnosis and treatment, and results analysis, our stroke program is intended to improve treatment of stroke patients before significant irreversible damage occurs.
Treating patients with tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), a 'clot-busting' drug, is an effective treatment for acute ischemic stroke if administered within a three-hour window from the onset of symptoms. The time-sensitive nature of tPA therapy requires that acute stroke patients be transported to hospitals that are prepared to provide a quick response, such as Milton Hospital.
For patients potentially requiring neurosurgery, Milton Hospital can provide a seamless patient transfer to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
