Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Milton Awarded an "A" for Patient Safety by the Leapfrog Group

Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Milton (BID-Milton) was recently honored with an “A” Hospital Safety Score by The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits.

Calculated under the guidance of Leapfrog’s Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single “A,” “B,” “C,” “D,” or “F” score representing a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from preventable harm.  More than 2,500 U.S. general hospitals were assigned scores in late April, with about 32 percent receiving an “A” grade. The Hospital Safety Score is fully transparent, and its website at www.hospitalsafetyscore.org offers a full analysis of the data and methodology used in determining grades.

This is the second time within the last year that BID-Milton has been awarded an “A” for patient safety from the Leapfrog Group.

“Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Milton has made significant investments to create robust patient safety and healthcare quality programs,” said Ashley Yeats, MD, vice president of healthcare quality and chief medical officer. “To once again be awarded an ‘A’ for patient safety by a nationally respected group like Leapfrog is a strong testament to the culture of continuous improvement in place at the hospital.”

“Safety should come first for our families when we pick a hospital, because errors and infections are common and deadly,” said Leah Binder, president & CEO of The Leapfrog Group, which produces the Hospital Safety Score. “No hospital is perfect, but we congratulate the Board of Directors, clinicians, administration and staff of Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Milton for achieving an “A” and showing us you made the well-being of your patients your top priority.”

To see how BID-Milton’s scores compare to other hospitals locally and nationally visit the Hospital Safety Score website at www.hospitalsafetyscore.org, which also provides information on how the public can protect themselves and loved ones during a hospital stay.

The Leapfrog Hospital Survey assesses hospital performance based on national performance measures of safety, quality and resource utilization. These measures are of specific interest to healthcare purchasers and consumers, and cover a broad spectrum of hospital processes, outcomes, and structures in many areas of care. The measures also provide hospitals with the opportunity to benchmark the progress they are making in improving the care they deliver.
